The Sensani system is an IoT based smart hand sanitizer dispenser network developed by Mkazi Concepts (PTY) Ltd. as a solution for the infection prevention and control challenge faced by healthcare establishments. The solution is designed to meet this challenge by establishing a decentralized ID-based infrastructure access and digital registry of key hand hygiene moments during care of patients. Our goal is to drastically improve overall environmental health and safety by deploying connected devices to act as observers of healthcare standards.

Research in hospitals shows a high level of cross contamination between patients during administration of basic health care. 45-48 million citizens depend on public healthcare facilities, more than 70% of the population. Facilities are understaffed and overcrowded with 10 thousand patients for every 64 health service workers. The national department of health reports that national compliance across its facilities is between 30-40%. Hand hygiene is difficult to track due to the labour intensive methods of manual observation and check sheets employed. Physical observers need to be present to report on hand washing activities and submit findings. Due to poor surveillance, 1 in 7 South Africans is at risk of acquiring a health care associated infection with each hospital visit.
The Sensani network solves this problem by exploiting the high interoperability that already exists between end user and client facing technologies. Using the Sensani smart phone application, a patient or end user can remotely on-board themselves onto an enterprise’s private or public infection prevention and control system. By doing so, the user grants themselves access to enter a facility structure by means of the Sensani hand sanitation station. All data generated by the devices is visualised on dashboards viewable by the healthcare enterprise. The streams of data provide real time visibility of operational safety levels, foot flow, movement patterns and length periods between contacts.
